How to recruit young trustees: Afternoon cuppa session
Wednesday 15 April, 2pm - 3pm
Are you interested in recruiting more young people to your museum’s board?
About this training
There’s an increasing awareness of the need to diversify trustee boards in museums, galleries and heritage organisations. In the most recent available data about Arts Council England NPOs, only 11% of trustees are under 34 and 51% are aged 50+.
Young people consistently report they don’t feel museums are relevant to them. They face practical barriers to visiting, don’t feel museums tell stories that resonate with them and still find it challenging to enter the museum workforce. Appointing young people to museum boards will help to address these concerns.
In this session, we will:
· provide top tips for how to bring young people onto your museum’s board of trustees,
· learn more about our free Engaging your first young trustees programme and how you can become part of our 2026-27 cohort,
· hear about the impact the programme has had on the New Forest Heritage Centre, who took part in 2024-25,
· answer any questions you have about the young trustees programme.
Take a look at the full schedule.
This training will be delivered virtually on Zoom over one hour.
Who should attend?
This session is for trustees and staff from museums and heritage organisations who are interested in appointing young people aged 18-30 to their boards. If you’re a young person looking for opportunities to become a young trustee, we advise visiting Young Trustees Movement or Leicester Museums Jobs Desk to find out more and see current vacancies.
