Join Kids in Museums for an informal virtual briefing session exploring young people’s careers programmes in museums. With young people reporting increasing pessimism about their future careers, how can museums help them build skills and confidence they can take with them into their future working lives? Developing your museum’s career offer is also a great way to build meaningful connections with young audiences.
For those who want to explore the power of getting involved in a free national initiative, we’ll be sharing more about our careers themed Takeover Day for 2026. Our research shows Takeover Day can support children and young people to learn about different jobs in museums and develop their skills for employment in the heritage sector and beyond. For heritage organisations, Takeover Day is a great opportunity to connect with different groups of children and young people, attract new audiences and pilot new ways of working. Jaia Kemp, Engagement Officer at Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum will share a case study about their first careers themed Takeover Day with a local primary school.
You’ll also hear from Charleston, one of the organisations shortlisted for the Family Friendly Museum Award in the Best Museum Careers Initiative category. Head of Learning. Nick Kidd, will share more about their pioneering work experience project with a local college, which has helped young people develop creative skills through on-site, hands-on experiences.
In this session, we will:
learn how Takeover Day can be adapted for museums of any size and budget,
hear how the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum successfully embedded a careers focus in their first Takeover Day,
hear how Charleston’s partnership with East Sussex College is equipping students for employment through direct engagement with professional practice.
