Kids in Museums believes museums are for everyone. However, for many autistic families (where one or more members of any age are autistic) there are multiple barriers in place that make visiting museums a challenge.

About this training

Whether you want a refresher or you’re starting from scratch, this virtual training session will explore the many simple and practical changes you can make to create a more accessible environment at your museum or heritage site. We will share museum specific examples from a lived experience perspective.

This training webinar will be led by Emily Elsworth. Emily is a late diagnosed autistic adult, who delivers from her own lived experience to help museums make their sites more accessible for autistic people. She will be joined by Louise Bragan, who will share a case study about provision for autistic families at Wakefield Museums and Castles. Wakefield Museum were shortlisted in the Best Accessible Museum category in the Kids in Museums Family Friendly Museum Award in 2024.

This session covers:

· exploring what autism is,

· what the potential barriers are for autistic families,

· top tips for making your site more accessible for autistic families.
